Dan McCole is an Associate Professor in the Department of Community Sustainability at Michigan State University, part of the College of Agriculture & Natural Resources. He holds a B.A. from the University of Massachusetts, an MBA from MSU, and a Ph.D. from the University of Minnesota. His research focuses on the intersection of natural resource and agricultural-based tourism with community sustainability, integrating business principles (marketing, finance, HR) with social sciences (psychology, sociology, economics). Recent projects include USDA-funded studies on wine tourism in the U.S., Sea Grant initiatives in Michigan’s Thumb region, and assessments of Uganda’s Community Knowledge Worker program. He teaches courses like Introduction to Travel and Tourism and Social Entrepreneurship.
McCole’s work emphasizes the economic, environmental, and socio-cultural dimensions of sustainable tourism. He has received the CANR Excellence in Teaching Award (2022) and contributed to high-impact projects such as analyzing Michigan’s Pure Michigan campaign and Great Lakes water level impacts on tourism. His research spans topics like wine tourism consumer behavior, off-road vehicle park design, and youth development through sports programs. McCole collaborates with institutions like the Bailey Scholars Program and Center for Regional Food Systems to advance community sustainability goals.
