Brent Ross is an Associate Professor and Associate Chairperson for Undergraduate Programs in the Department of Agricultural, Food, and Resource Economics at Michigan State University (MSU), part of the College of Agriculture & Natural Resources. He holds a Ph.D. and M.Sc. from the University of Illinois and a B.Comm. from the University of Guelph.
His research focuses on strategic management in agribusiness, sustainable food systems, and the governance of food supply chains. He employs qualitative research methods and simulation modeling (system dynamics and agent-based approaches) to analyze complex agrifood systems. Key areas include entrepreneurial strategies in emerging wine regions, regional food system resilience, and biofuel supply chain development. His work has been funded by USDA NIFA, NSF, and industry partners, with publications in Food Policy, Agribusiness: An International Journal, and the International Food and Agribusiness Management Review.
- Teaching: Courses include AFRE 340 (Food Marketing Management), AFRE 445 (Strategic Management for Food and Agribusiness Firms), and AFRE 857 (Strategic Management in Agribusiness).
- Leadership: Director of Undergraduate Programs and Project Director for a USDA-funded $10M initiative enhancing regional food system resilience.
Dr. Ross has received the 2019 Excellence in Teaching Award from the College of Agriculture & Natural Resources. He collaborates internationally, developing agribusiness education programs in Africa, Europe, and Latin America, and leads workshops on case study writing and active learning strategies.
