His research spans two key areas: Transgender Studies focusing on employment inequities among Two-Spirit and trans populations in Canada, and Critical Men's and Masculinity Studies analyzing emotional landscapes of young cisgender men through Eminem's music. He leads the SSHRC-funded project Untouchable? Eminem, Whiteness & the Emotional Landscapes of Young Men and the WAGE-funded Working For Change: Investigating Two-Spirit and Trans Under- and Unemployment in Canada in partnership with Egale Canada.
- Co-editor of Trans Activism in Canada: A Reader
- Publications in Radical History Review, Sexualities, and Canadian Journal of Law and Society
- Recipient of the Carlisle Hanson Award in Human Rights
His scholarly work interrogates the intersections between gender, race, and labor systems, particularly through the lenses of neoliberalism and post-Fordist economic structures. Irving's teaching and advisory roles focus on creating equitable pathways in Childhood and Youth Studies, while his publications trace trans communities' struggles against systemic economic violence and biopolitical regulation.
