Irving Brecher (1923–2007) was a distinguished economist and Professor at McGill University, where he rose to Full Professor by age 39. He held roles at Harvard, Northwestern University, and contributed to institutions like the International Labour Organization. He founded McGill’s Centre for Developing-Area Studies (CDAS) and led the Pakistan Institute of Development Economics. Later, he co-founded the International Centre for Human Rights and Democratic Development (Rights and Democracy). His expertise spanned Canadian economic policy, development economics, and human rights advocacy.

His later newspaper articles addressed domestic and foreign policy issues with analytical rigor.
