Dan Hofrenning is Professor of Political Science at St. Olaf College, with affiliations in both the Department of Political Science and the Environmental Studies program. He teaches courses on American politics, campaigns and elections, environmental politics, and the intersection of religion and politics.
His research spans American political institutions, religious influences on politics, campaign dynamics, and pedagogical approaches in political science education. He is the author of a book and numerous scholarly articles, and is currently completing a book titled The Promise–and Perils–of American Politics, forthcoming with Routledge in 2025.
Hofrenning has led innovative educational programs, including taking students to New Hampshire during the presidential primary season for hands-on campaign internships. This experiential learning initiative received media coverage and public engagement through student blogs featured in the StarTribune, with over 15,000 site visits.
As a public intellectual, he has contributed commentary to major national outlets including the New York Times, Los Angeles Times, StarTribune, Minnesota Public Radio, MSNBC, NBC Nightly News, CNN, and BBC Worldwide Radio. He has also served as a panelist on Twin Cities Public Television’s Almanac.
He has held significant administrative roles, including Chair of Political Science and Environmental Studies, Associate Dean of Social Sciences, and Founding Director of the Institute for Freedom and Community, which promotes rigorous dialogue on public issues across ideological differences. He also served as interim Director of the Academic Civic Engagement Program and the Center for Innovation and the Liberal Arts.
Hofrenning completed his graduate studies in political science and public policy at Duke University and the University of Minnesota, after earlier studies at a seminary. He was born in New York and raised in Minnesota.
