Professor Dan Healey holds the position of Professor of Modern Russian History at the University of Oxford, affiliated with St Antony's College. His research focuses on the social and cultural history of modern Russia and the Soviet Union, with particular emphasis on sexuality, gender, medicine, and law. He is renowned for his groundbreaking work on the history of homosexuality in the Russian Empire and Soviet Union, as well as the medical systems within Stalin's Gulag labor camps.
His notable publications include *Homosexual Desire in Revolutionary Russia* (2001), *Bolshevik Sexual Forensics* (2009), and *Russian Homophobia from Stalin to Sochi* (2017). His latest book, *The Gulag Doctors* (2024), examines the paradox of medical care within the Gulag system. He currently studies Georgian archives and participates in the Oxford School of Global and Area Studies.
Professor Healey's research explores intersections between state power, medicine, and identity formation. His work bridges historical analysis with contemporary issues such as LGBTQ+ rights in Putin's Russia and the legacy of Soviet medical practices. He actively engages with media, offering expert commentary on Russian homophobia and human rights.
His advisory work includes supervising DPhil students like Pádraig Nolan at St Antony's College. Grants and funding support his interdisciplinary projects, which often involve collaboration across history, gender studies, and medical humanities.
