Dan Freeman is an Assistant Professor in the Electronic Production and Design (EPD) department at Berklee College of Music. He also holds faculty positions at New York University’s Clive Davis Institute of Recorded Music and The Juilliard School, where he designs and teaches courses in electronic music production, synthesis, and live performance with laptops. His work bridges performance, technology, and education.
Freeman earned his AB in History from Harvard University, graduating Magna Cum Laude. He also studied jazz bass and classical piano at the New England Conservatory Preparatory School, where he was the first student to complete the Level IV Jazz Certificate. His educational journey reflects a strong foundation in both the humanities and music performance.
His research and creative interests focus on the integration of live instruments with digital technology, particularly using Ableton Live. He specializes in electronic music genres such as disco, house, synthwave, and indie electronic, with a deep expertise in sound design and synthesis. His work extends to developing new interfaces for live digital performance and curriculum design for electronic music programs.
Freeman has received NYU Adjunct Faculty Grants from 2016 to 2020, supporting his educational initiatives. He has also served as an Arts Envoy for the U.S. State Department in Colombia, Chile, and Denmark, promoting music technology education internationally.
As an educator and mentor, Freeman has privately trained numerous artists, including Grammy-winning producers and top-level DJs. He has also led workshops and group courses through the Brooklyn Digital Conservatory, which he founded in 2015 to expand access to electronic music education in Latin America. He has designed curricula for institutions such as NYU, Juilliard, DJLab (Costa Rica), and the Electronic Music Collective.
Freeman leads the digital art/music collective Comandante Zero and maintains a production studio in Brooklyn (Studio J – The Playroom), where he produces records, designs sounds, and creates live performance setups for artists. His professional performance history includes collaborations with major artists like Peter Gabriel, Angélique Kidjo, the B-52s, and Tunde Adembimpe of TV on the Radio, performing at venues ranging from Carnegie Hall to Berghain in Berlin.
