Prof. Dr. Damian Dombrowski serves as Professor at the Institute of Art History and Director of the Modern Department of the Martin von Wagner Museum at the University of Würzburg. His academic career at Würzburg spans from Research Assistant (1998) through Habilitation (2004) and Senior Assistant to his current leadership roles, with significant international engagements including the Institute for Advanced Studies in Princeton (2008/09) and the World Art History Institute in Shanghai/Beijing (2024).
Dombrowski's educational foundation includes Art History (major) with minors in Romance Studies and Political Science, culminating in a doctorate from the University of Münster (1996). His formative academic experience began at Würzburg in 1987, establishing his core methodology that artistic form actively shapes historical narratives rather than merely reflecting them.
His research synthesizes phenomenological analysis with discourse and context orientation, focusing on Modern Art's dynamic relationship with historical processes. This approach, developed through collaborations like his work with Professor Stefan Kummer, positions artistic expression as a historical agent within broader cultural frameworks.
Professional milestones include editorial work at Radio Vaticana (1988/89), doctoral research at Rome's Bibliotheca Hertziana (1994/95), Research Associate at TU Dresden (1997/98), and the Rudolf Wittkower Guest Professorship in Rome (2008). His directorship of the Martin von Wagner Museum's Modern Department since 2014 integrates academic scholarship with public curation.
As museum director, Dombrowski leads institutional initiatives connecting academic research with public engagement, overseeing modern art collections while maintaining active scholarly contributions through international professorships and advanced research fellowships that bridge European and Asian art historical traditions.
