Dallin Oaks is an Associate Professor of Linguistics at Brigham Young University (BYU), affiliated with the College of Humanities. His research focuses on the intersection of grammatical knowledge, wordplay creativity, and sociocultural contexts, particularly in humor, advertising, and pedagogical practices. He has presented at institutions like Oxford University, including a 2014 lecture on 'Conscious Grammatical Knowledge and Word Play Creativity.'
His research interests span onomastics (the study of names), structural ambiguity in language, historical linguistics, and the application of linguistic principles in education and marketing. Notable works include analyses of Mormon naming practices, the role of grammar in advertising, and the use of Mother Goose rhymes in teaching historical linguistic patterns.
Recent publications (2023-2021) emphasize Latter-day Saint onomastics and prescriptivist language debates. Earlier works (2016-1998) explore structural ambiguity in humor, educational technology for language learning, and corpus-based pedagogy. His interdisciplinary approach bridges linguistics with religious studies, advertising, and digital tools.
