Mirjam Schmuck is a Professor at Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz in the Department of German Institute for Historical Linguistics of German, within the School of Philosophy and Philology. Her research focuses on Historical Linguistics, Contrastive Linguistics, Onomastics, Language Change, and Grammaticalization.
Professor Schmuck's work examines morphological and morphosyntactic change, historical pragmatics, name grammar, and sociolinguistic aspects of personal names. She has led significant projects including the German Surname Atlas and Digital Dictionary of German Surnames.
Her publications demonstrate consistent focus on diachronic linguistics, particularly the evolution of naming practices, grammaticalization processes, and areal variation in German language features.
Professor Schmuck has organized academic conferences on proper names and grammatical variation, and served as co-editor for Contributions to Name Research since 2016.
