Mariann Slíz is a Professor at the Department of Hungarian Historical Linguistics, Sociolinguistics and Dialectology of Eötvös Loránd University (ELTE), where she also serves as Deputy Director of the Institute of Hungarian Linguistics and Finno-Ugric Studies. Her academic career spans teaching and research in onomastics, historical linguistics, and applied linguistics.

Her research focuses on personal name systems, applied onomastics (including lexicography, translation studies, and terminology), and name theory. Recent publications analyze name translation, pseudoscientific naming practices, and medieval Hungarian anthroponymy. She teaches courses on Hungarian language history, research methodology, and editorial skills at BA, MA, and doctoral levels.
Her work bridges historical and contemporary linguistic analyses, with empirical studies on name perception and cultural-political influences on naming traditions. She contributes to academic knowledge through editorial roles and international collaborations, particularly in Uralic and Slavic onomastic research.
