Dr. Daan van der Veen is a Senior Lecturer in Sleep and Chronobiology and Section Lead for Chronobiology at the University of Surrey's Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences. His academic journey includes an MSc and PhD in Chronobiology from the University of Groningen (Netherlands), followed by postdoctoral research at the University of Surrey (UK) and the University of Notre Dame (USA), as well as a visiting researcher stint at Columbia University (USA). He specializes in behavioral genetics of sleep and chronobiology, focusing on ultradian and circadian rhythms and their misalignment impacts on health.
His research emphasizes interdisciplinary approaches to study tissue-specific biological clocks (e.g., liver, brain, heart) and their roles in health and disease. Key areas include circadian disruption's link to diabetes, cancer, and neurodegenerative disorders, as well as therapeutic strategies targeting rhythm restoration. Notable projects include the ENLIGHTENme study investigating urban lighting's health impacts and a recent study demonstrating blue-light therapy's benefits for sleep in older adults.
Teaching responsibilities span modules in Biological Sciences, Biomedical Sciences, and Biochemistry, including module coordination for Biological Rhythms (BMS3066). His work bridges clinical applications and basic science, with a focus on translational research to address 24-hour society health challenges.
