Debbie Hooton is a Senior Lecturer at Edge Hill University, serving as the Mathematics Subject Lead since 2018. Previously, she worked as a numeracy consultant in a north west Local Education Authority (LEA) and qualified as a Professional Development (PD) Lead for the National Centre for Excellence in the Teaching of Mathematics (NCETM). She joined Edge Hill in 2013, contributing to teacher training and mathematics education.
Her research focuses on mathematics education, including characteristics of mathematicians, teaching methods for times tables and multiplicative reasoning, and the role of memory skills in learning. She holds a Fellowship of the Higher Education Academy (HEA).
Teaching responsibilities include mathematics and professional studies at the university level. She coordinates termly meetings for primary school mathematics leads, addressing topics like Ofsted preparation and teaching mastery approaches. Her external roles include membership on the Abacus Maths Hub strategic board and the NCETM Initial Teacher Education (ITE) work group, collaborating on issues such as mentor support and inclusive education strategies for EAL and SEN pupils.
