D. Hudson Smith is an Assistant Research Professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Clemson University's College of Engineering, Computing and Applied Sciences. Based at the Watt Family Innovation Center, he leads the “Watson in the Watt” applied AI program focused on community-driven AI innovation and student development in machine learning.

His research integrates Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning to solve cross-domain challenges in healthcare, politics, economics, agriculture, and education. Leveraging his background in theoretical atomic physics and scientific computing, he applies data science methodologies to real-world industry problems through statistical modeling and ML techniques. Current projects emphasize practical AI tool deployment across diverse societal sectors.
As director of the “Watson in the Watt” initiative, he oversees a portfolio of over a dozen interdisciplinary projects while mentoring students in AI/ML applications. His work bridges academic research with community impact through the Watt Family Innovation Center's collaborative ecosystem.
