César Rodríguez-Garavito is a Professor of Law and Chair of the Center for Human Rights and Global Justice at New York University School of Law. He directs the Earth Rights Research & Action (TERRA) Clinic and the More-than-Human Rights (MOTH) Program. His research focuses on climate change, environmental justice, Indigenous rights, and international human rights law. He is a leading scholar in Earth rights and a field lawyer with extensive litigation experience in climate, rights of nature, and Indigenous rights cases.
Education: PhD in Sociology (University of Wisconsin-Madison, 2007), MA in Sociology (UW-Madison, 2004), MA in Philosophy (National University of Colombia, 2002), MA in Law and Society (NYU, 2001), JD (University of the Andes, 1996).
Research interests include the intersection of law with ecological ethics, Indigenous knowledge systems, and human rights advocacy in the Anthropocene. He has advised global human rights organizations, served as an expert witness for the Inter-American Court, and contributed to landmark legal frameworks like the Science Panel for the Amazon. His work has been featured in New York Times, National Geographic, and Mongabay.
Awards: More-Than-Human Fellowship (London Design Museum), UN Museum's Top 10 Culture for Impact 2024 List. He has co-edited major legal journals and books on human rights, business accountability, and climate litigation.
Advising and Grants: Former Associate Professor and Director of Global Justice Programs at the University of the Andes, Director of Dejusticia, and visiting professor at Stanford, Brown, and other institutions. His clinical programs and advocacy initiatives focus on actionable legal strategies for Earth rights and climate justice.
Labs/Teams: Leads TERRA Clinic and MOTH Program, fostering interdisciplinary approaches to environmental law and rights-based advocacy. Collaborates with global networks like the Science Panel for the Amazon and the Business and Human Rights Resource Center.
