Cyril Grueter is an Associate Professor in the School of Human Sciences at The University of Western Australia (UWA), with a joint affiliation in the Centre for Evolutionary Biology (School of Biological Sciences). He also serves as a research fellow in UWA’s Africa Research and Engagement Centre and holds an Adjunct Professorship at Dali University (China). His research focuses on primate sociality, multilevel societies, and the ecological challenges faced by primates in montane environments. Grueter’s work bridges behavioral ecology and evolutionary anthropology, emphasizing the evolutionary drivers of social organization in primates and humans.
Education: PhD from the University of Zurich (2005–2009), postdoctoral research at the Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Anthropology (2009–2011). Current projects include studying golden snub-nosed monkeys in China and chimpanzees in Rwanda. He teaches courses such as Human Biology - Becoming Human and Biological Anthropology.
Awards: School of Human Sciences Mid-Career Research Award (2022). Grants: Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (2019–2022), National Natural Science Foundation of China (2014–2020). His research contributes to UN Sustainable Development Goals, particularly conservation and biodiversity.
Publications span primatology, ecology, and conservation, with a focus on social behavior, habitat use, and climate change impacts. Media engagements include discussions on primate communication and chimpanzee behavior.
