Cynthia Williams is a Full Professor at Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam, holding affiliations with the Faculty of Law, the Kooijmans Institute, and the research group Law, Markets and Behavior. She also serves as a Medewerker (staff member) at Indiana University Bloomington since 2023. Her expertise spans corporate governance, climate responsibility, and regulatory frameworks, with a focus on intersections between law, ethics, and environmental policy.
Her research investigates topics such as fiduciary duties in climate contexts, SEC disclosure mandates, and transnational corporate social responsibility. Notable contributions include analyses of corporate governance during financial crises and the evolving role of institutional investors in promoting sustainability.
Recent publications highlight her work on regulatory responses to climate change, including the SEC’s evolving stance on ESG disclosures and the implications of landmark legal cases like West Virginia v. EPA. She teaches courses on American Corporate Law and Sustainability, ESG, and the Corporation, reflecting her commitment to integrating legal education with contemporary business ethics.
