Cynthia Nazarian is an Associate Professor of French and Affiliated Faculty in the Program in Comparative Literary Studies at Northwestern University’s Weinberg College of Arts and Sciences. She holds a B.A. from Columbia University and M.A./Ph.D. in Comparative Literature from Princeton University. Her research focuses on figurations of violence in early modern French, English, and Italian literature, exploring how poetic forms interrogate sovereignty and selfhood.
Her academic journey includes prestigious fellowships such as the Kaplan Institute Faculty Fellowship (2017-2018) and Barbara Thom Postdoctoral Fellowship (2012-2013). She teaches undergraduate and graduate courses on topics ranging from Renaissance literature to satire and violence in poetry. Nazarian’s scholarly contributions include her monograph *Love’s Wounds: Violence and the Politics of Poetry in Early Modern Europe* (2016), which examines how early modern poets used love poetry to critique state authority.
Her current research project, *Violent Sympathies*, bridges early modern literature with modern political theory to analyze sympathy’s challenges to state legitimacy. Nazarian has been recognized for her teaching excellence, including the Weinberg College Distinguished Teaching Award, and her work appears in journals like *Cultural Critique* and *Modern Philology*.
