Laura Penny is an Assistant Professor at the University of King's College, teaching in the Contemporary and Early Modern Studies Programs and lecturing in the Foundation Year. She co-founded and co-directs Humanities for Young People, a summer program for secondary school students, and volunteers with Halifax Humanities 101, offering humanities education to low-income residents. Her research focuses on popular culture, mass media, digital culture, ethics, aesthetics, and satire, with a particular interest in thinkers like Montaigne, Spinoza, and Benjamin, as well as themes such as feminisms and media analysis.
Dr. Penny holds a BA from Vind, an MA from Western University (UWO), and a PhD from SUNY Buffalo. Her work bridges interdisciplinary humanities, emphasizing critical engagement with contemporary and historical texts. Recent scholarly contributions include essays on Benjamin and Deleuze’s readings of Kafka, consumerism during economic downturns, and Kant’s philosophy of poetry.
Her courses span topics like girlhood studies, media culture, French feminist theory, and early modern selfhood, reflecting her commitment to accessible, socially engaged scholarship.
