Cynthia Imogen Hammond is Professor of Art History at Concordia University, where she actively engages in research-creation, urban heritage, and interdisciplinary scholarship. Her work centers on women and the built environment, urban landscapes, oral history, and public art, with a strong emphasis on feminist perspectives and community-based projects.
Her research interests include the spatial history of the suffrage movement, post-industrial ecologies, gender and space, and the politics of urban change. She explores how heritage is co-constructed through collaborative practices, often integrating artistic methods into academic inquiry. Her projects frequently involve walking tours, installations, and performances that activate historical sites and public memory.
Her recent publications and artistic projects reflect a deep engagement with gardens, architecture, and the representation of women in urban landscapes. Themes of memory, identity, and transformation recur across her work, especially in her exploration of abandoned or repurposed spaces. She has led SSHRC-funded initiatives, including a Partnership Development project on the urban knowledge of older Montrealers.
Hammond has participated in numerous exhibitions and collaborative events, such as Promenade parlante, The Possible, and Un Paradis sans pommiers, often working with scholars, artists, and community members. Her artistic output includes painting, installation, performance, and research-creation, bridging the visual arts and academic discourse.
She has held artist residencies at institutions such as La Napoule Art Foundation and the Caetani Cultural Centre, and her work has been featured in galleries and public spaces in Montreal and beyond. She continues to produce significant interdisciplinary work that challenges traditional boundaries between art, history, and urban studies.
