Cynthia E. Coburn is a Professor in the School of Education and Social Policy (SESP) at Northwestern University, holding joint appointments in Human Development and Social Policy and Learning Sciences. She serves as an Associate Fellow at the Institute for Policy Research. Her research focuses on the interplay between educational policy, classroom practices in urban schools, and the dynamics of school district governance. Coburn’s work emphasizes understanding how instructional policies translate into teacher practices and how research can inform educational improvement.
She earned her BA in Philosophy from Oberlin College (1989), followed by a MA in Sociology and PhD in Education from Stanford University (1997, 2001). Prior to academia, she worked with a national nonprofit advocating for marginalized communities in school reforms.
Her research interests include policy implementation frameworks, research-practice partnerships, and the role of evidence in educational decision-making. Notable contributions include conceptualizing 'latent research use' and analyzing district-level absorptive capacity for learning. Coburn has been recognized with prestigious awards such as the American Educational Research Association Early Career Award (2011) and election to the National Academy of Education (2020).
Coburn’s recent work explores PreK-3 continuity in mathematics instruction, district leadership dynamics, and the microprocesses of policy deliberation. She co-leads initiatives like the California Collaborative for District Reform and contributes to national committees on educational research communication.
