Crysal Wilkinson is a Professor of English at the University of Kentucky, specializing in Creative Writing within the MFA program. She holds an MFA from Spalding University and a BA in Journalism from Eastern Kentucky University. Her research focuses on Black Appalachian culture, mental health narratives, and women's roles in rural settings. She is affiliated with the Appalachian Center, African American and Africana Studies, and the Commonwealth Institute for Black Studies.
Wilkinson has authored multiple award-winning works, including Praisesong for the Kitchen Ghosts (2024), Perfect Black (2021), and The Birds of Opulence (2016). Her writing explores themes of identity, race, and family across genres like poetry, fiction, and memoir. Notable awards include the NAACP Image Award, O. Henry Prize, and Ernest J. Gaines Prize.
Her academic contributions include teaching creative writing and hosting workshops on ancestry and storytelling. She has been a featured speaker at events like the Kentucky Book Festival and National Book Festival, emphasizing foodways, literature, and community engagement.
