Cristina Cattaneo is a Full Professor of Forensic Medicine at the University of Milan, where she also teaches Anthropology. She serves as Director of LABANOF (Laboratory of Forensic Anthropology and Odontology) and MUSA (University Museum of Anthropological, Medical and Forensic Sciences for Human Rights), and acts as a consultant and expert witness for Italian and European courts on forensic medical and anthropological matters.
Her research focuses on forensic anthropology and human rights applications, particularly in migrant identification, victimology of sexual/domestic violence and torture survivors, and integration of foreign-origin families. She leads critical humanitarian projects including the Right to Identity initiative and forensic assessment of migrants killed at sea through collaboration with Italy's Extraordinary Commissioner for Missing Persons.
Professor Cattaneo's scientific contributions have earned recognition through:
- Adelaide Medal from the International Academy of Forensic Sciences
- Clyde Snow Award from the American Academy of Forensic Sciences
As Co-Editor in Chief of Forensic Science International, she shapes global forensic scholarship while directing LABANOF's identification work and MUSA's human rights-focused museum. Her public engagement includes media appearances to popularize forensic science and advocate for identification as a fundamental human right.
