Research interests include elite theory, comparative politics, and the interplay between ideology and governance. His publications analyze populism's ambivalent impact on democracy, Latin America's political transformations, and historical patterns of elite competition. He co-organized workshops on Latin American right-wing politics and populism's democratic implications, funded by Thyssen and Volkswagen Foundations.
His 2009 monograph Kampf der Eliten examines elite struggles in Latin America from 1810-1982, while recent work explores post-neoliberalism and the resurgence of leftist movements. Though no explicit awards are listed, his prolific workshop leadership highlights collaborative research impact.
