Education
- PhD (2010) – "Eighteenth-century responses to Sophocles' Oedipus at Colonus"
Research Interests
Ryan’s work ranges broadly across the reception of classical texts, especially Sophocles, in early modern and Enlightenment Britain. She is particularly engaged with Neo-Latin literature, the pedagogical challenges of teaching ancient languages, and the intersection between musicology and classical culture. Her forthcoming projects signal continued interest in Koine Greek pedagogy and the disciplinary cross-pollination between Classics and Theology.
Publication Profile
Her recent output demonstrates a dual focus on scholarly reception studies and practical language pedagogy. Articles such as Colonus in England’s Green and Pleasant Lands (2021) illuminate 18th-century appropriations of Greek tragedy, while reviews and reflective pieces on textbooks for Greek and Latin reveal a commitment to improving ancient-language instruction. Collectively, her publications trace a trajectory from close philological work to broader cultural history and educational innovation.
Teaching & Engagement
Ryan currently teaches New Testament Greek within Oxford’s Faculty of Theology and Religion. She has also led outreach initiatives, including a 2008–2009 primary-school Latin enrichment programme that blended university expertise with classroom practice, demonstrating an ongoing dedication to widening participation in classical studies.
