Craig Garlick is a Research Associate at the Centre for Ironmaking Materials Research (CIMR) within the School of Engineering at the University of Newcastle. His 40-year career spans technical roles in iron and steelmaking at BHP, Onesteel, Rio Tinto, and Yancoal, focusing on decarbonization and process optimization. He holds Bachelors and Masters degrees in Metallurgy from the University of Newcastle.
His research interests include alternative ironmaking technologies, decarbonisation of steelmaking, pyrometallurgy, and mineral processing. Current work focuses on developing low-carbon iron production methods using Australian ores, with an emphasis on process modeling and material characterization. Craig has led projects such as the ARENA-funded $2.9M 'Electric Smelting of Australian Hematite-Goethite DRI' and a $150K BHP-funded initiative on hydrogen-based DRI production.
Key contributions include process improvements at coal handling plants, inclusion engineering in steel refining, and transitioning feedstock for rolling mills. He is affiliated with the National Institute for Engineering and Technology Research (NIER) and holds certifications in Six Sigma Black Belt.
