Craig Browne is an Associate Professor at the University of Sydney’s School of Arts and Social Sciences, specializing in critical social theory. He coordinates the Development Studies Program and teaches courses on sociological theory, global transformations, and symbolic power. His research focuses on social change, global transformation, subjectivity, and democracy, with a particular interest in the political imaginary and creative democracy. He has published extensively, including books like *Social Theory and the Political Imaginary* (2023) and *Critical Social Theory* (2017).
His work bridges French and Anglophone social theory, exploring themes such as hierarchy, recognition, and symbolic power. He has held leadership roles in global academic networks, including co-chairing the International Sociological Association’s Research Committee on Sociological Theory (RC16) and coordinating the European Sociological Association’s Research Network on Social Theory (RN29). He has supervised numerous PhD students and secured grants for research on democratic creativity and postcolonial welfare states.
Browne’s recent publications analyze austerity, postcolonial violence, and the political imaginary’s role in modernity.
