Dr. Courtney Flint is a Professor of Natural Resource Social Science in the Department of Environment & Society at Utah State University, with additional affiliation to the Ecology Center. Her research examines community responses to changing landscapes and natural resource conditions, specializing in water management and community wellbeing in the Intermountain West region.
Her primary research domains include:
- Community wellbeing assessment through the Utah Wellbeing Project (40,000+ surveys across 60+ cities)
- Water resource governance through NSF-funded projects (Transformation Network and I-GUIDE)
- Downstream vulnerability analysis of aging dams
- Social-ecological resilience of river/watershed organizations
- Development of community engagement toolkits for amenity-oriented communities
Recent publications (2024-2025) consistently focus on social dimensions of environmental management, particularly community adaptation to hydrological changes, watershed governance, and wellbeing metrics in rapidly changing rural landscapes. Thematic analysis shows strong emphasis on interdisciplinary approaches bridging sociology, environmental science, and policy.
Dr. Flint leads the Flint Research Lab and advises multiple graduate students. She directs major NSF-funded initiatives including:
- Transformation Network: Convergence research on watershed sustainability
- I-GUIDE: Geospatial analysis of hydroclimatic extremes
- Utah Wellbeing Project: Statewide community assessment
