Courtney C. Carignan is an Assistant Professor at Michigan State University, holding joint appointments in the Department of Food Science and Human Nutrition and Department of Pharmacology and Toxicology within the College of Agriculture & Natural Resources. As an environmental exposure scientist and epidemiologist, her work focuses on reproductive and child health impacts from PFAS, flame retardants, and arsenic in consumer products, water, and food.
- Education: B.S. in Biological Sciences (Rutgers University, 2004), Ph.D. in Environmental Health (Boston University School of Public Health, 2013), Postdoctoral Research (Dartmouth College & Harvard Chan School of Public Health)
Her research spans biomonitoring across diverse populations like infertile couples, pregnant women, and PFAS-impacted communities. She investigates multiple chemical exposures and preconception health, advocating for strategies to prevent regrettable substitutions in product safety.
Recent publications highlight PFAS contamination in water and flame retardants in occupational settings, with methodologies for exposure measurement and public health interventions. Awards include the Katherine Skinner Memorial Prize for women's health research and recognition as Pioneers Under 40 in environmental public health.
- Scientific Awards: Katherine Skinner Memorial Prize, Champion of Toxics Use Reduction, Pioneers Under 40 (Environmental Public Health), Joan M. Daisey Outstanding Young Scientist Award
Dr. Carignan's work extends to community engagement through initiatives like the PFAS Exchange, providing medical screening guidance and clinician training for PFAS-impacted populations. She contributes to national discussions on chemical regulation and immune system impacts via op-eds in Environmental Health News.
