Costantino Manes

Costantino Manes is an Associate Professor in Hydraulics at the Department of Environmental, Land and Infrastructure Engineering (DIATI), Polytechnic University of Turin. He holds a PhD from the University of Aberdeen (2006) and has held research and teaching positions at the Swiss Federal Institute for Snow and Avalanche Research and the University of Southampton. Since 2015, he has been a faculty member at Politecnico di Torino, where he leads research in environmental fluid mechanics and water systems.

His research interests include:

• Experimental and theoretical fluid mechanics
• Turbulence and sediment transport
• Hydrodynamic cavitation for water disinfection
• Ecohydraulics and fish-swimming efficiency
• Local scouring around bridge structures
• Modeling of coalescing filters and porous media flows

His recent publications (2024–2025) demonstrate a strong interdisciplinary focus, combining fluid dynamics with ecology, environmental engineering, and public engagement. Key themes include turbulence modulation in vegetated flows, fish behavior in engineered systems, and innovative water disinfection techniques. His work often involves advanced experimental and computational modeling.

Scientific recognitions include:

• Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (UK), since 2014
• Associate Editor, Advances in Water Resources (2016–present)

He actively supervises PhD students and leads major research projects such as BUBBLES4LIFE (H2020) and SHIEELD, focusing on sustainable water solutions and nature-based coastal defense. He also contributes to doctoral colleges and curriculum development at Politecnico di Torino.

He is affiliated with the Interdepartmental Center CWC - CleanWaterCenter@PoliTo and conducts research in the Hydraulics and Fluid Mechanics Laboratory (DIATI).
