Professor Cormac Mac Amhlaigh is a Professor of Public Law at the University of Edinburgh's School of Law. He is affiliated with centres including the Global Justice Academy, Edinburgh Centre for Constitutional Law, and Edinburgh Centre for Legal Theory. His academic career began with a Ph.D. in Law from the European University Institute (EUI), preceded by studies at Queen's University Belfast (LL.B.), University of Zaragoza (exchange), and University College Dublin (LL.M. in European Law).
His research focuses on constitutional pluralism, EU governance, public law theory, and the intersection of law with legitimacy in supranational contexts. Key areas include post-Brexit constitutional dynamics, Scottish constitutional law, and the evolution of European legal systems. He critiques traditional state-centric legal frameworks and explores how new governance forms challenge conventional paradigms.
Mac Amhlaigh's publications span constitutional theory, EU legal architecture, and political constitutionalism. His recent works address legitimacy in the EU post-crisis era and foundational questions about legal system identity. He is editor of New Constitutional Horizons: Towards a Pluralist Constitutional Theory (2022) and has contributed to debates on Brexit's legal implications and the role of public law in pluralist frameworks.
