Corinne Cortese

Professor Corinne Cortese is a Professor of Accounting and Associate Dean (Higher Degree Research) at the University of Wollongong's Faculty of Business and Law. She holds a PhD in Accounting from the University of Wollongong, along with degrees from Macquarie University and the University of Wollongong. Her research focuses on critical accounting, regulatory processes, and the intersection of accounting with social and environmental issues, with notable work on corporate governance, disability welfare, and diversity practices. She has been recognized with the 2022 Academy of Management Best Paper Award for her research on corporate boards. Cortese is an active editor for leading accounting journals, including Accounting, Auditing & Accountability Journal and Critical Perspectives on Accounting, and serves as a member of CPA Australia and a Justice of the Peace.

Her research interests span critical accounting, political dimensions of regulation, corporate governance, and the role of accounting in social policy. Notable themes include the political influences on accounting standards, disability welfare reform, and diversity in corporate Australia. Cortese’s recent articles address topics such as algorithmic accountability in welfare systems, surveillance capitalism in retail, and decoupling diversity reporting from practice.

Cortese supervises numerous PhD and Master’s students, focusing on topics like corporate governance, disability policy, and accounting education. She has secured funding for projects such as Examining Diversity in Corporate Australia and Accounting for Oil and Gas. Her work bridges academic research with practical impact, emphasizing ethical and socially responsible accounting practices.
