Constantino Urcuyo is an Academic Director at the Centro de Investigación y Adiestramiento Político Administrativo (CIAPA) in Costa Rica and an affiliated faculty member at Tulane University’s Stone Center for Latin American Studies and Center for Inter-American Policy and Research (CIPR). He holds a Ph.D. in Political Sociology (University of Paris V Sorbonne, 1978) and a Lic. in Law and Notary (University of Costa Rica, 1972).
His research focuses on Central America, Political Science, and Democratic Culture, with notable work on civil-military dynamics, electoral processes, and human rights within political contexts. His publications analyze Latin American democratization, electoral systems, and Tocqueville’s influence on democratic theory in the region.
Professional roles include Professorships at CIAPA and the University of Costa Rica (1976–present), Director of the School of Political Science at UCR (1978–1984), and advisory roles such as Political Advisor to the Social Christian Unity Party (1986). He has held leadership positions in organizations like the Costa Rican Association of Political Science and ACORDE.
