Conor Murphy is a Professor in the Department of Geography and a member of the ICARUS research centre at Maynooth University. He specializes in interdisciplinary research on hydroclimatology, historical climatology, and climate change adaptation. His work engages closely with public bodies, enterprises, and communities to inform policy and practice. He has authored over 120 papers in top journals like Science, Nature, and Nature Climate Change, and led the Irish Climate Change Assessment Report (ICCA) Volume 3 on climate resilience.
Research interests focus on drought impacts, water resource management, and climate adaptation strategies. His studies span hydrological monitoring, historical climate data recovery, and the socio-economic dimensions of climate change. Recent work highlights trends in extreme low streamflows, global drought risk, and the integration of digital tools like Google Trends for water planning.
He advises the Irish government on climate policy through roles like the Adaptation Committee of the Climate Change Advisory Council (CCAC). Academic leadership includes directing the MSc Climate Change program since 2009, teaching climate modules, and mentoring over 11 PhD graduates. His team currently oversees 5 PhD students and 2 postdocs. He has secured €7M+ in research funding and contributes to journals like Water Scarcity and Drought as an Associate Editor.
Public engagement is central to his work, with frequent media appearances and keynote addresses at national and international forums. His research bridges scientific rigor and actionable insights for policymakers, emphasizing climate resilience and equitable adaptation.
