Conor Buggy

Conor Buggy is an Associate Professor at University College Dublin (UCD) in the School of Public Health, Physiotherapy and Sports Science. He serves as Director of the UCD Centre for Safety and Health at Work and Programme Director for the Certificate in Safety and Health at Work. Previously, he held roles as Programme Director for the Masters in Occupational Safety and Health and the Higher Diploma in Safety Health and Wellbeing. Buggy earned a BA in Environmental Science from Trinity College Dublin (1997–2001) and a PhD in Environmental Engineering from Dublin City University (2001–2006). He also holds qualifications in university teaching and entrepreneurial education.

His research focuses on occupational safety and health (OSH), emergency management, safety culture, and the impact of education on societal change. Notable projects include studies on pandemic preparedness, athlete concussion management, and healthcare accessibility in developing nations. Buggy is actively involved in promoting equality, diversity, and inclusion (EDI), serving on UCD’s EDI committees and the National LGBTI Federation’s research group. He has received awards such as the UCD Values in Action Award and multiple teaching excellence recognitions.

Buggy’s teaching spans modules like Health and Safety Management, Chemical Safety and Toxicology, and Global Health Sustainability. His work integrates interdisciplinary approaches, emphasizing real-world applications. He has secured grants for initiatives like the COVID-19 in Irish Workplaces study and projects addressing migrant experiences and social justice. His publications address topics ranging from workplace safety to LGBTQ+ health policy, reflecting his commitment to actionable research with societal impact.
