Colleen Kumiega serves as Professor and Assistant Chair of the Division of Natural and Behavioral Sciences at Hilbert College, where she chairs the Behavioral Sciences department overseeing Psychology, Human Services, and Alcohol and Substance Abuse Counseling programs. With deep roots in the Buffalo community, she integrates real-world clinical experience into her teaching while maintaining active community partnerships.
Education:
- AAS and BS from Hilbert College
- MS from Canisius University
Her research and teaching focus on behavioral interventions across social justice, criminal justice, mental health, developmental disabilities, and addiction treatment. She pioneered Hilbert's Associate of Arts in Alcohol and Substance Abuse Counseling program, developing five core courses to address critical workforce shortages, with agencies like BestSelf Behavioral Services sponsoring employees through the certification program.
Kumiega emphasizes empathetic relationship-building in education, creating safe spaces for vulnerable discussions about addiction while leveraging her Erie County network to secure student internships. She maintains active clinical practice alongside teaching to stay connected to community needs, and personalizes online instruction through Zoom office hours and alumni mentorship programs.
