Colin Espie is a Professor of Sleep Medicine at the University of Oxford, serving as Founding Director and Clinical Director of the Experimental & Clinical Sleep Medicine Programme at the Sleep & Circadian Neurosciences Institute (SCNi). He also leads the Oxford Online Programme in Sleep Medicine and holds roles as Honorary Senior Research Fellow at Somerville College and Senior Clinical Research Fellow in the Department of Psychiatry. Previously, he was Director of the University of Glasgow Sleep Centre and is now an Emeritus Professor there.
His expertise spans clinical and laboratory assessment/treatment of sleep disorders, particularly using Cognitive Behavioural Therapeutics (CBTx). He focuses on insomnia, sleep's relationship with mental and metabolic health, and digital medicine. He has authored over 300 papers and multiple books, including seminal works on insomnia treatment and CBTx. Dr. Espie co-founded Big Health, a company scaling evidence-based digital CBT (Sleepio).
His research is funded by major organizations like the Wellcome Trust, MRC, and NIH. Awards include the Mary A. Carskadon Educator Award and Peter Hauri Achievement Award. He serves on editorial boards for Journal of Sleep Research and Sleep Medicine Reviews, and chairs the European Sleep Research Society's CBT Academy.
Key grants include support from the Chief Scientist Office (Scotland), Cancer Research UK, and the Education Endowment Foundation. His work extends to public engagement, featuring in documentaries and media discussions on sleep science.
