Colin Dewey is a Professor at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, affiliated with the Department of Biostatistics & Medical Informatics and the Department of Computer Sciences (affiliate). He holds roles as Faculty Leader of the Cancer Informatics Shared Resource and Co-Program Director of the CIBM Training Program. His research focuses on computational methods for analyzing biological sequence data, including RNA-seq transcriptome analysis, evolutionary genomics, and metadata standardization for machine learning.
Research interests include developing efficient statistical methodologies for large-scale genomic data, with projects in transcriptome analysis, whole-genome evolutionary studies, and automated metadata standardization. He has contributed tools like RSEM, DETONATE, and PSGInfer for genomic analysis.
Recent work includes studies on hybridization detection, inflammation effects on wound healing, and transcriptomic landscapes in Nile rats. He has secured grants from NIH and WisCID, and was named a Vilas Associate in 2016. His group includes over 20 students and researchers, with a focus on bioinformatics and genomic method development.
Labs and teams associated include the Center for Genomic Science Innovation and leadership roles in training programs. Teaching includes courses on bioinformatics, most recently BMI/CS 576 (Introductory Bioinformatics) in Fall 2024.
