Dr. Colette Barry is an Assistant Professor in Criminology at the University College Dublin School of Law, where she also serves as Director of the UCD Institute of Criminology and Criminal Justice. Her research examines prison work, deaths in custody, and emotional labor in criminal justice systems. Previously, she held lecturing positions at Ulster University, Sheffield Hallam University, and Technological University Dublin.

Her research employs qualitative methods to understand how criminal justice professionals manage emotional demands, particularly surrounding prisoner deaths. Current projects include an oral history of Irish prison officers and studies of emotional labor in Offender Management units.
Dr. Barry's publications focus on judicial emotional labor, prison staff experiences, and jury-judge dynamics. Her work consistently addresses power structures and wellbeing in punitive systems.
Teaching: Coordinates modules including Introduction to Criminology, Experiencing Punishment, and Introduction to Penology. She is a Fellow of Advance HE/Higher Education Academy UK.
