Cody Miner is an Interim Assistant Professor at the School of Architecture, Woodbury University, and serves as Director of the Wedge Gallery. He also co-directs MODEST Common, an Art and Architecture gallery in Downtown LA. Previously, he worked at Zago Architecture on high-profile projects such as "A New Federal Project" for the US Pavilion at the 2016 Venice Biennale and the VPAC facade wall for the 2017 Chicago Architecture Biennial. Currently, he is building his practice SEMIFIRM, focusing on the intersections of architecture and art through material experimentation and innovative design.
Education:
- Master of Architecture, Southern California Institute of Architecture (SCI-Arc)
- Bachelor of Interdisciplinary Studies: Urban Planning & Design, Arizona State University
Research Interests:
Miner’s work explores the boundaries between architecture and art, emphasizing material innovation, sustainable practices, and digital fabrication. His projects often involve collaborative experimentation with found materials, such as in the limited-edition book "The Halves and Half Nots", and installations like "Sticks & Stones". He investigates themes such as architectural form through primitive shapes, the integration of art into domestic spaces (e.g., "Holy Crap"), and the interplay between speculative design and realized construction. His practice, SEMIFIRM, highlights this duality, creating installations and furniture that challenge conventional aesthetics while addressing environmental and social considerations.
Professional Highlights:
- Contributed to the 2016 Venice Biennale and 2017 Chicago Architecture Biennial
- Curated exhibitions including "Twofers" at SPRING/BREAK Art Show LA
- Developed projects like "Low Rise Housing Competition" (2021) and "Rear Yard Dingbat" (2020)
