Clive Oppenheimer is a Professor of Volcanology at the University of Cambridge's Department of Geography, affiliated with the Climate and Environmental Dynamics and Geographies of Knowledge research groups. He holds additional roles as an Associate Fellow of the Etna Observatory (INGV) and member of the McDonald Institute for Archaeological Research. His career spans over three decades, including fellowships at institutions like NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory and New Mexico Tech.
Research Interests: Oppenheimer focuses on volcanic processes, eruption impacts (climatic and societal), geoarchaeology, and sensors for atmospheric science. His work bridges geoscience with interdisciplinary fields, including paleoclimatology and human-environment interactions.
Publications & Projects: He authored seminal books like Eruptions that shook the World and Mountains of Fire. Current projects include the Mount Paektu Research Centre and studies on the Millennium Eruption's climatic effects. Recent articles analyze volcanic sulfur budgets, Ethiopian Rift pulsatory volcanism, and climate impacts of historical eruptions.
Public Engagement: Oppenheimer co-created documentaries Into the Inferno (Netflix) and Fireball (Apple TV+) with Werner Herzog. He also contributes to radio programs like BBC's Desert Island Discs and The Life Scientific.
Supervision & Leadership: He currently advises 12 PhD candidates and co-founded the Mt. Paektu Research Centre. His work integrates field research, remote sensing, and historical records to advance volcanic science.
