Clifton Crais is a Professor of History at Emory University. He holds a B.A. from the University of Maryland (1982), M.A. and Ph.D. from Johns Hopkins University (1984 and 1988, respectively). His research focuses on African history, comparative world history, and the intersections of violence, memory, and narrative. He is the author of over 100 works, including the award-winning History Lessons: A Memoir of Madness, Memory, and the Brain (2014) and Sara Baartman and the Hottentot Venus (2008). His work has been supported by major grants and fellowships from the ACLS, NEH, and Fulbright.
Dr. Crais supervises doctoral students in African and world history, with a focus on periods from 1700 to the present. His current project, The Killing Age, examines global violence from 1750 onward. He also leads interdisciplinary initiatives on 'horror and enchantment' in historical scholarship. Recent students have published on colonial frontiers, environmental history, and migration in Africa.
