Cliff Connell is an Associate Professor at the School of Nursing and Midwifery, Monash University, where he serves as Deputy Director of Graduate Research and Course Coordinator for the Bachelor of Nursing (Honours). With over 30 years of nursing experience, including two decades in emergency care, he is a leading academic in patient safety, emergency nursing, and evidence-based education.
Education:
- Doctor of Philosophy in Emergency Nursing, Monash University (awarded 7 August 2019)
His research interests include emergency care, resuscitation teamwork, rapid response systems, and recognizing and responding to patient deterioration. He leads and collaborates on significant research projects, such as AI-enhanced emergency resuscitation debriefs and vital sign monitoring in emergency departments.
His recent publications span topics from survey integrity and infection control to teamwork assessment and pandemic nursing. These works reflect a strong focus on clinical safety, educational innovation, and emergency care systems.

Connell actively supervises students and has examined multiple theses. He contributes to academic leadership through roles such as editorial board member for International Emergency Nursing and peer reviewer for journals including Nurse Education Today and Australasian Emergency Care. He is also a member of key professional committees, including the College of Emergency Nursing Australasia Research Committee and the Australian Resuscitation Council (Victorian Branch).
He is affiliated with the Monash Emergency Research Collaborative (MERC) as a Research Fellow and is a Fellow of the College of Emergency Nursing Australasia.
