Clementine Chambon is a Visiting Researcher in the Department of Chemical Engineering at Imperial College London, affiliated with the Energy Futures Lab and the Grantham Institute for Climate Change. She is also the full-time co-founder and CTO of Oorja Development Solutions, a social enterprise providing solar-powered irrigation and milling systems to rural Indian farmers, serving over 30,000 people. Her research focuses on decentralized energy systems, biomass gasification, solar PV integration, and CO₂ mitigation in energy-deprived regions.
Education: PhD in Chemical Engineering (Imperial College London, 2017), supervised by Dr. Jason Hallett, Prof. Paul Fennell, and Dr. Anthe George, with a focus on lignocellulosic biomass processing using low-cost ionic liquids. Awarded a First Class MEng in Chemical Engineering from the University of Cambridge.
Research Interests: Energy access optimization, renewable energy systems design (solar, biomass), techno-commercial modeling of mini-grids, and sustainable biomass valorization. Her work bridges academia and industry, emphasizing practical solutions for energy poverty reduction and climate resilience.
Publications highlight advancements in solar mini-grid economics, biomass pretreatment methodologies, and ionic liquid applications. Awards include recognition from Forbes 30 Under 30 and MIT for her entrepreneurial impact in clean energy.
Awards: Cisco Global Problem Solver Challenge Award, Echoing Green Climate Fellowship, 60 Decibels Top Impact Award, and multiple industry accolades.
Grants: EPSRC Doctoral Prize Fellowship, Imperial College President’s PhD Scholarship, and funding from the Grantham Institute and Climate-KIC. She leads Oorja’s efforts in scaling solar irrigation systems, combining technical innovation with social enterprise models.
