Benedict Winchester is a Researcher in the Department of Physics at Imperial College London and a College Lecturer in Physics at the University of Oxford. He holds a MPhys degree from the University of Oxford (2015–2019) and is affiliated with the Grantham Institute's Science and Solutions for a Changing Planet (SSCP) Doctoral Training Partnership. His current roles include Research Associate and College Lecturer positions starting from 2023/2025.
His research focuses on solar technologies, including photovoltaic (PV) modules, PV-thermal collectors, and agrivoltaics. He develops open-source models for energy systems, desalination, and agricultural synergies with solar installations. His work addresses energy access (SDG 7) and clean water goals (SDG 6), emphasizing affordability, feasibility, and land efficiency.
Recent articles highlight solar mini-grid optimization, agrivoltaic systems, and desalination plant lifetime optimization. He collaborates on projects like the RS–DFID Africa Capacity-Building Initiative and the CLOVER energy system framework. His research also explores carbon pricing impacts on African energy access and decentralized solar power's role in reducing emissions.
Benedict’s academic journey includes a Ph.D. under the SSCP program and current affiliations with Imperial College’s Faculty of Natural Sciences. His work integrates technical innovation with policy and socio-economic considerations, aiming to advance sustainable energy solutions globally.
