Oytun Babacan is a current Imperial College Research Fellow at the Grantham Institute for Climate Change and the Department of Physics at Imperial College London. He is affiliated with the Energy Futures Lab, Nelson Group, and the SSCP DTP (Science and Solutions for a Changing Planet Doctoral Training Partnership). His research focuses on integrating energy storage, electric vehicles, and renewables into urban/rural infrastructure, with an emphasis on carbon mitigation pathways and decentralized energy systems.
Education: Completed graduate studies at the University of California San Diego and University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. Prior work included solar resource forecasting, battery module testing, and microgrid modeling.
Research Interests: Decarbonization of power systems, low-carbon infrastructure planning, convex optimization, machine learning for cluster analysis, and techno-economic assessments. His projects address distributed renewables, EV fleet optimization (via the EVOLVE initiative), and sustainable fuels.
Advising: Supervises BSc/MSc/PhD students in Physics, Electrical Engineering, and Environmental Policy. Offers opportunities in electric vehicles, sustainable fuels, and energy market reforms.
Labs/Teams: Active in the Nelson Group and EVOLVE project, collaborating on interdisciplinary engineering challenges.
