Claudio de'Sperati is an Associate Professor of Psychobiology and Physiological Psychology at the Faculty of Psychology, Vita-Salute San Raffaele University (UniSR) in Milan. He serves as Director of the Laboratory of Action, Perception, and Cognition (LAPCO) at UniSR and has held various academic and research positions since 1985.
His educational background includes a degree in Biological Sciences from the University of Turin (1985, with honors) and a PhD in Neurological Sciences from the same institution (1993).
de'Sperati's research focuses on perceptual technologies, with specific interests in eye movements, attention, mental imagery, and human-computer interactions. His work bridges cognitive neuroscience with practical applications for aging populations and clinical conditions. He has pioneered research on how age-related motor decline affects visual perception and has developed innovative approaches using eye tracking and pupillometry to study attention and consciousness.
His recent publications demonstrate a strong focus on aging and technology, with several studies examining how virtual reality and assistive technologies can enhance quality of life for older adults. His work spans cognitive neuroscience, clinical applications, and human-computer interaction, with a growing emphasis on translational research that addresses real-world challenges.
Among his notable scientific achievements is the Mercator professorship awarded by the German Research Foundation (DFG) in 2005. He serves on the editorial boards of several prestigious journals including Scientific Reports, Journal of Eye Movement Research, and Phenomenology and Mind.
de'Sperati has secured significant research funding, including the "Get grandparents on bikes: The Telecyclette project" (2023-2027, funded by Velux Stiftung), "How do attentional training programs improve reading skills?" (2023-2024, PRIN), and "Stairway to Elders: Bridging Space, Time and Emotions in Their Social Environment for Wellbeing" (2018-2022, Fondazione Cariplo). He has coordinated the Psychology curriculum for the PhD program in "Philosophy of Mind" at UniSR from 2008-2017.
As Director of the Laboratory of Action, Perception, and Cognition (LAPCO), de'Sperati leads a multidisciplinary team investigating the neural and cognitive mechanisms underlying perception, action, and consciousness. His lab has developed innovative methodologies combining eye tracking, pupillometry, and virtual reality to study both basic cognitive processes and their applications in clinical and aging populations.
