Adam Barnas joins Ball State University's Department of Psychological Science as an Assistant Professor. He completed his PhD in 2019 at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee under Adam Greenberg and has five years of postdoctoral experience, including four years at the University of Florida working with Steven Weisberg and Natalie Ebner.
Dr. Barnas's educational journey includes:
- BA in Psychology and Molecular & Cellular Biology from University of Illinois
- MA in Psychology from University of Dayton
- PhD in Experimental Psychology (Cognitive Neuroscience) from University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee (2019)
- 1 year of postdoctoral training at University of Wisconsin-Madison
- 4 years of postdoctoral training at University of Florida
His research bridges the gap between laboratory-based attention studies and real-world applications. Dr. Barnas investigates how visual attention mechanisms guide ecologically relevant behavior through two complementary themes: 1) the behavioral and neural mechanisms of visual attention, and 2) how visual attention supports spatial cognition and navigation in aging. His work spans cognitive and developmental psychology, neuroscience, and experimental aging.
Dr. Barnas employs a multimodal approach integrating neuroimaging, virtual reality, and behavioral methods to study attention across the lifespan. His research has implications for understanding age-related cognitive changes and developing interventions to enhance safety, independence, and quality of life.
His laboratory is equipped with advanced technology including behavioral testing equipment, eye-tracking systems, immersive virtual reality, and an omnidirectional treadmill, providing a comprehensive environment for studying human perception and cognition.
