Dr. Claudio Aporta is Professor and Canadian Research Chair in Marine Environmental Protection at Dalhousie University's Marine Affairs Program. With a PhD in Anthropology from the University of Alberta and postdoctoral training at Université Laval, his research bridges anthropology and geography through ethnographic studies of Inuit communities.
His work focuses on:
- Documenting Inuit environmental knowledge and coastal use patterns
- Developing digital atlases for knowledge preservation
- Analyzing impacts of Arctic shipping corridors
- Advancing marine spatial planning frameworks
Recent publications demonstrate strong emphasis on ethical representation of indigenous knowledge, with recurring themes in cultural preservation and governance challenges in changing Arctic environments.
