Aldo Chircop is a Professor of Law at Dalhousie University's Schulich School of Law, with cross-appointments in the Marine Affairs Program and the Department of International Development Studies. His expertise spans Canadian maritime law, international maritime law, and Arctic shipping regulation. He holds an LLD from the University of Malta, and LLM and JSD degrees from Dalhousie University. Dr. Chircop's research focuses on international shipping in polar regions, particularly Arctic governance, environmental protection, and regulatory frameworks.
He has secured significant grants, including SSHRC Insight Grants for projects on Arctic shipping and ocean governance. His awards include the Walter Owen Book Prize (shared), the Dalhousie Distinguished Services Award, and a Teaching Excellence Award. Dr. Chircop chairs the Comité Maritime International’s Polar Shipping Working Group and advises institutions like Dalian Maritime University.
Recent publications explore Arctic shipping governance, environmental risks, and regulatory challenges. His work emphasizes balancing legal standards with ecological and Indigenous considerations in maritime policy.
